Address for Correspondence: Dr. M.S.Rajeshwari, Professor of Anatomy, Department of Anatomy, Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute, Bangalore, Karnataka, India. E-Mail: [email protected] Background: Lateral pterygoid muscle plays an important role in the mandibular movements and dynamics of temporomandibualr joint. Anterior displacement of the disc and temporomandibular dysfunction has been related to the insertion of upper head of LPM in the TMJ disc. Materials and Methods: A study was conducted on forty specimens from formalin fixed cadavers in the department of Anatomy , BMCRI, Bangalore. Results and Discussion: In 72.5% of cases the upper head of LPM insert to the disc and blend with the capsule and lower head inserts to the inferior aspect of the disc, to the capsule and the condyle of mandible. Conclusion: Though there is no clear demarcation between the heads of LPM majority of the upper fibers insert to the disc and to the capsule.

Landmark of Ultrasound-Guided Trigeminal Block: Lateral Pterygoid Muscle.

I read with great interest the recent article by Antoun Nader and colleagues (1) and a similar technique present in another article (2). From an anatomical point, insertion into the lateral pterygoid muscle is on the lateral pterygoid plate and the origin is the mandible. From the computed tomography image (3), we can understand that the lateral pterygoid muscle can be detected by ultrasound be...

A Rare Bilateral Variation in the Formation of Median Nerve

The median nerve is formed by fusion of lateral (C5-C7) and medial (C8, T1) cords from the brachial plexus. Bilateral variations in the formation of median nerve are very rare. One of such variations was observed during the dissection of the upper limb of approximately a 30-35-year-old man cadaver, according to Grant s method. The median nerve was formed by the union of three roots on both side...

Microanatomy and surgical approaches to the infratemporal fossa: an anaglyphic three-dimensional stereoscopic printing study.

OBJECTIVE The infratemporal fossa (ITF) is a continuation of the temporal fossa between the internal surface of the zygoma and the external surface of the temporal bone and greater wing of the sphenoid bone that is sitting deep to the ramus of the mandible. The principal structure to understanding its relationships is the lateral pterygoid muscle. Other important structures are the medial ptery...
